Casting Announced for Atlantic Theater Company's Bottom of the World

Casting has been announced for the Atlantic Theater Company’s world premiere of playwright Lucy Thurber’s Bottom of the World. Ivy is inspired by the curtains in her hospital room. Mondo thinks the materials have voices. I have no idea what’s going on with the peacock feathers. Casanova is wearing what appears to be a boy scout uniform. Everyone is having some sort of confidence crisis.

People need to stop saying things are a hot mess. That was at least four seasons ago.

Tim visits. Valerie is mixing the soft fabric with the hardware materials to go with her black mask. Tim thinks it’s too much. April’s quilted booty shorts (allegedly going with a pink and white striped design) say “diaper” to Tim. Kristin’s “orchid” hat isn’t working for her and her dress is fussy. Although no one asks for her opinion, Gretchen thinks it’s sloppy.

The Atlanta Braves are currently leading the NL East and would want to keep it that way. In an attempt to further beef up their offense, the Braves acquired first baseman Derrek Lee from the Chicago Cubs. The Braves did not have to pay much in return as they let go of three prospects, all pitchers to the Cubs but none showing great promise.

Lee initially vetoed a Cubs trade with the Los Angeles Angels before the deadline. The Brave-Cubs deal seemed more attractive to Lee as the Braves are in playoff contention, their first in five years.

Granted that the 34-year old Lee stays healthy, he can provide more offense to an already strong team. His coming to Atlanta can make up for injuries to Troy Glaus and Chipper Jones.

His numbers have declined from 0.306, with 111 RBIs and 35 homers to 0.251, 56 RBIs and 16 homers during the final year of his $65 million, five-year contract.

There seems to be a bright side to his game just this weekend as he hit four homers against the St. Louis Cardinals in their three-game series.

His head was pounding when he made one request to the cameraman a few feet away: "Can you please turn off the light?"

Antonio Cromartie stood in the nearly empty locker room after the Jets' preseason opener on Monday night, towel over his head, battling a migraine and speaking softly about his impressive debut with his new team. For two quarters, Cromartie flashed the skills that made him an instant star as a rookie in San Diego in 2006. He blanketed receivers and showed flashes of why the Jets traded for him in the offseason.

"It's a great defense," the cornerback said in the aftermath of the Jets' 31-16 preseason loss to the Giants. "I'm just trying to come in and help out as much as I can. I feel comfortable in this defense. Coach (Rex) Ryan and (defensive backs) Coach (Dennis) Thurman are building the confidence in me. I've accepted the role they've given me."

For now, that means filling the void left by holdout Darrelle Revis. Cromartie has embraced playing in Revis' left corner spot after spending the majority of his career on the opposite side. His transition has been seamless during training camp. Monday night, Cromartie effectively shut down Mario Manningham and Hakeem Nicks in the first half, allowing just one completion for 13 yards.

Revis Island may be closed for business these days, but Al-Cro-Traz is fast becoming a tourist attraction.

"To watch him play, you have to get excited for the regular season," safety Jim Leonhard said.

Cromartie was hardly perfect though. He missed an open-field tackle on Ahmad Bradshaw and dropped a couple sure interceptions, prompting Ryan to joke, "We're not getting our money's worth."

Despite the throbbing headache, Cromartie got an earful from his teammates. Bart Scott cracked that he was going to buy a Jugs Machine to help the fourth-year pro improve his catching skills.

"I told him he should have been out there playing with his glasses on," linebacker Calvin Pace said. "It's rare that you're going to find a rangy cornerback like that. It was a great pickup for us. He's going to make our job up front a lot easier. I love playing with him."

Cromartie appears ideally suited for Ryan's aggressive schemes. He looked right at home on Monday playing man-to-man coverage.

"It's just a fresh start for him," Pace said. "It's the environment and attitude we have about having fun. Guys buy into that. It takes your enjoyment up to another level. It's crazy. But you don't hear fun preached a lot in this league. You would think that would be said more. With Rex, we work, but it's a loose group."

Lincoln Center Theater's new production of the musical classic won seven Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival as well as the Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Drama League Award for Best Musical Revival. SOUTH PACIFIC, directed by Bartlett Sher, began performances Saturday, March 1, 2008 and opened Thursday, April 3, 2008 at the Vivian Beaumont Theater. The show will end its record breaking run on Sunday, August 22, 2010, making it the longest running Broadway revival of a Rodgers & Hammerstein musical.

Kelli O'Hara, who won critical acclaim for her performance as the original Nellie Forbush in this revival, will be performing for the Broadcast special, alongside original Emile de Becque, Paulo Szot.  (Every best effort was made to recruit original Captain Cable, Matthew Morrison, for the special performance, however his GLEE production schedule made his return impossible). O'Hara officially returned to the productionon August 10, 2010 and will play out the final performances with Szot through August 22, 2010.
