Knicks draft Rautins, Fields in second

GREENBUGH, N.Y. -- One is a heck of a shooter. The other is quite the leaper.

And the New York Knicks, still with their eye on a bigger prize, hope both Andy Rautins and Landry Fields will be fetching doughnuts for LeBron James at the start of the 2010-11 season.

The Knicks failed to buy into the first round of the NBA draft Thursday night and were left with the two selections they began the day with: Nos. 38 and 39.

"It would be great to come out with one good player, to be honest with you," coach Mike D'Antoni said beforehand. "If we hit two, it's a home run."

Despite a need for size on a team with only five players under contract beyond July 1, the Knicks instead went first for a shooter, Rautins, a member of the Canadian national team who shot .407 on 3-pointers for Syracuse last season.

The 6-foot-4 guard did almost nothing but shoot 3s at Syracuse, taking 282 of his 360 career attempts from beyond the arc. In the 2010 NCAA tournament, he went 12-for-24 in Syracuse's three games and scored 24 points against Gonzaga in the second round.

Rautins father, Leo, was a member of the Knicks in training camp in 1987 and appeared in three exhibition games for New York.

Fields was selected first team All-Pac 10 after leading the league in scoring at 22.0 points per game while grabbing 8.8 rebounds. He also led the team in steals (51), blocks (25) and minutes per game (36.3), and he registered a vertical leap of 39 inches when the Knicks worked him out. Only Corey Fortson of Arkansas registered a higher vertical leap (40 inches).

Celtics pick Texas guard Avery Bradley

The Celtics [team stats] have officially turned the page and moved on to the 2010-11 season. A week after losing Game 7 of the Finals, the Celtics selected Avery Bradley with the 19th pick in tonight’s NBA draft.

Bradley, a freshman guard from Texas, was somewhat of a surprise considering the Celtics needs on the wing and in the frontcourt. A number of players were available to fill those positions, but general manager Danny Ainge elected to go with Bradley, who figures to back up Rajon Rondo [stats] at the point.

The 6-foot-3, 180-pounder is not a pure point guard and will need time to adjust to the position. He should be able to step in and make an impact immediately defensively.

Bradley averaged 11.6 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists in his lone season with the Longhorns. His addition is a sign that Nate Robinson, an unrestricted free agent, may not return.

With the 52nd pick, the Celtics selected Notre Dame big man Luke Harangody. Harangody was one of the most productive players in college, averaging 21.8 points and 9.1 rebounds last season. The biggest questions for Harangody’s game translating to the NBA will be his lack of height and athleticism.

UFO Contact July 4th - will alien beings celebrate Fourth with us?

The aliens are coming, the aliens are coming! Stop playing on your new Xbox 360 and listen up! Apparently there is quite a bit of internet activity with people concerned over potential UFO Contact for July 4th, 2010. It's understandable that some people may believe fireworks are a signal to extraterrestrial travelers. The bright flashes in the sky may even spell out alien words we don't even realize, that promote peace or unrest among beings from other planets. When it comes to aliens, you either believe they exist or don't. The best way to prepare for them if you believe is to read alien books and watch popular films which portray aliens. Some of the best include ET, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Men in Black, Signs and The Day The Earth Stood Still (the older version not the new one with Keanu Reeves). Don't panic if you're expecting some sort of alien invasion on the Fourth of July. There has yet to be a confirmation that aliens will arrive here on July 4, 2010 by CNN, USAToday, Fox News or any other major news outlet. However, it's unclear how aliens would notify us if they are planning to visit. Stay tuned, and remember to use aluminum foil on your head like in the movie "Signs" to block any potential brain scrambling!

Scheyer looking to overcome odds again

Jon Scheyer only has to look back four years to identify a similar live-and-learn moment.

Despite accolades such as being a McDonald's All-American, the Glenbrook North graduate faced critics who wondered how his game would translate from high school to college.

Now, about two months since winning a NCAA tournament with Duke, Scheyer faces another batch of questions about how well he will fit in the NBA and where he will be taken during Thursday's draft.

"It's a similar situation that I faced going into college," Scheyer said. "I felt like I had a lot of doubters. I'm not playing for anyone else, but I take the same attitude."

Most mock drafts list Scheyer as a middle second round pick.

Justin Bieber hermaphrodite news hits internet & Twitter - is it for real?

It appears someone is having fun again at the expense of young singing sensation, Justin Bieber. The latest nasty viral rumor to be spread online is "Justin Bieber hermaphrodite", which has quickly become one of the top Google searches. This comes days after there had been "justin bieber pregnant" rumors started up.

Heidi Montag's Justin Bieber Twitter tweet - hacked by Spencer?

Other rumors started up were that "Justin Bieber had syphilis" and "Justin Bieber breaks neck". None of those were true. There had even been a death hoax about "Justin Bieber died" which is just one of many fake celeb death stories tossed online. Others have included Russell Crowe, Will Smith, Eminem, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart and Uncle Phil of Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

Justin Bieber has been in some real news lately. There was apparently a Twitter tweet message sent out by celeb reality star Heidi Montag in which she suggested they do a photo shoot together. Heidi later claimed her ex-husband the evil Spencer Pratt was behind the tweet and hacked into her account to write it.

So this latest "Justin Bieber hermaphrodite" thing is just some silly Twittering someone convinced others to do to make a funny joke. It's unfortunate for young Bieber, but he probably doesn't mind the publicity he keeps getting online. Sometimes they say you're not famous until you have haters, and it appears Bieber sure has his share!

Kansas Jayhawks Cole Aldrich, Xavier Henry and Sherron Collins await phone calls, millionaire status

Three Kansas Jayhawks are about to get paid. Tonight is the NBA Draft in which pro basketball's bottom feeders attempt to retool and the contenders dig for diamonds in the rough.

Cole Aldrich and Xavier Henry look like likely lottery picks while Sherron Collins could be a late first round or, more likely, late second round pick (so could Kansas State's Denis Clemente). Here's where the various draft sites have the KU trio headed.

Celtics pick Notre Dame F Harangody in 2d round

BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Celtics have selected Notre Dame forward Luke Harangody (HAIR-an-GOH-dee) in the second round of the NBA draft.

Harangody averaged 21.8 points and 9.1 rebounds as a senior last year.

He is 6-foot-8 and 246 pounds.

In the first round, the Celtics picked up Texas guard Avery Bradley with the 19th overall pick.

The Celtics need big men because Rasheed Wallace has said he plans to retire and starting center Kendrick Perkins tore ligaments in his right knee during the NBA finals and isn't expected to be ready for the start of the season.

Keith Sweat Claims No Such Thing As Being Irrelevant?

Veteran R&B singer Keith Sweat seems to be growing tired of people using the words like irrelevant and "you're over in the game" to describe recording artists that may not be at the top of the charts or in heavy rotation. According to Sweat, "you are never over until there's no breath in your body."

While promoting his latest album, "Ridin' Solo,' which is in stores now, Sweat discussed what he calls a resurgence -- not just for his career but for others, like Dru Hill.

"We have our favorite acts like SWV, New Edition we all grew up listening to them and they have a wide fan base, [but] those veteran groups are not in radio demographics. So you don't hear about them as much and then they end up falling in to adult contemporary, which has the 18-34 mainstream missing out because, radio is so concerned about whatever song is hot now and they feel that these artist are not relevant," Sweat tells The Boom Box.

With both a radio show and television series, areas he uses to catch up with artists like SWV and Dru Hill, Sweat says "People may say you're over in the game...but you are never over until there's no breath in your body.

lakers-select-derrick-caracter-with-the-58th-pick

The Lakers selected Texas El Paso junior forward Derrick Caracter with their second selection in the second round, the 58th pick overarll, despite General Manager Mitch Kupchak's earlier contention that the team's backcourt served as the team's biggest need.

Caracter, who spent his first two seasons at Louisville, averaged 14.1 points and 8.1 rebounds as he earned second-team All-Conference USA honors and shot a second-best 56.7% from the field during league play. He's known to have good footwork, post moves and agility.

Says Times columnist Mark Heisler of the 6-foot-9, 275-pounder: "Caracter is very strong, has good vision ... There are concerns about his conditioning and weight, which has neared 300 pounds and takes away from his mobility, and some question his attitude, too."

NBA Draft Results: Top 15 Storylines of the 2010 NBA Draft

The 2010 NBA Draft went pretty much as expected Thursday night, however several intriguing subplots emerged throughout the evening.

The Golden State Warriors decided against adding more offense and got defensive with Baylor's Ekpe Udoh.

The Utah Jazz opted to go small at No. 9, selecting Butler's Gordon Hayward inside of North Carolina's Ed Davis or Nevada's Luke Babbitt.

Only a handful of NBA teams were active on the trading front during the draft, none more so than Oklahoma City, which pulled off several trades and bolstered a weak front line with Cole Aldrich and young German center Tibor Pliess.

As usual, a handful of players went earlier than anticipated while several players slipped considerably down the draft board.

Here's a closer look at what went down at Madison Square Garden:
